Pre-emergence Poa Annua Control

Overview

Echelon® Herbicide is a selective pre- emergence and post-emergence herbicide for control of sedges, crabgrass, annual grass and broadleaf weeds. Echelon Herbicide is labeled for use in turf sites, including residential and institutional lawns, athletic fields, commercial sod farms, golf course fairways and roughs, roadsides, utility rights-of-way, railways and industrial areas.

How Does Echelon Herbicide Work

Echelon Herbicide is taken up by both weed roots and shoots of existing weeds and prevents growth of newly emerged weed seedlings. There are two active ingredients in Echelon: sulfentrazone and prodiamine. Sulfentrazone is a protox inhibiting herbicide that disrupts cell membrane integrity. Prodiamine is a pre-emergence herbicide that prevents plant cells from dividing which prevents plant growth. Symptoms in Poa annua range from chlorosis (yellowing) and necrosis (browning of leaf tissue) from the sulfentrazone to stubby roots and overall stunting from the prodiamine.

Echelon General Use for Preemergence Poa annua Control

Integrated management practices provide the most effective method for managing Poa annua . A healthy, dense stand of turfgrass will give desired turf the best chance to defend against weeds like Poa annua and other pests. Practices like aerification, proper mowing height, balanced fertility and irrigation, reducing shade, and correct soil pH can all help ensure turf is growing at peak performance. For pre-emergence Poa annua control, apply Echelon herbicide from 8 to 36 fl oz per acre depending on turf type. Follow these helpful tips to maximize the effectiveness of Echelon applications:

  1. Scouting Do not underestimate the amount of Poa annua in the area being treated. Often the level of infestation is much higher than is realized. Knowing how much Poa annua you have can set expectations for the overall impact of population reduction, which may create voids in the turf canopy.
  2. Established Turf. This product may be used on seeded, sodded or sprigged turfgrasses that are well established. First application of this product can be made following the second mowing, provided the grass has developed into a uniform stand with a good root system.
  3. Liquid Fertilizers . The addition of a sprayable nitrogen fertilizer with a nitrogen percentage above 20% may increase herbicidal activity on certain weeds and decrease turf tolerance on desirable turfgrass cultivars. Utilize local recommendations for sources and rates of fertilizer and refer to mixing directions on the fertilizer labels (e.g. UAN or urea solutions). Determine the compatibility of this product with the desired fluid fertilizer by mixing small proportional quantities in advance.
  4. Turfgrass Tolerance . Echelon has demonstrated tolerance on both cool- and-warm season turfgrasses. However, not all varieties and or cultivars have been evaluated. Turfgrass managers desiring to treat newly released varieties should first apply Echelon to a small area prior to treatment of larger areas.
  5. Irrigation . It is important to incorporate Echelon with light irrigation to achieve the most effective control.

Refer to the product label for appropriate rates and directions for use. Ensure the root zone of the desirable turf is healthy and actively growing. Should discoloration occur, know this is temporary and treated turfgrass will recover with new growth. Discolored leaf tissue will also be removed with mowing. If you have not used Echelon or are applying it to turfgrass that has never been treated with Echelon, test a small area prior to making large scale applications to determine turfgrass tolerance.
